I have found that my years as a dairy farmer prepared me in many ways for my political life.
As a farmer I relied on the advice of professionals to make my farm profitable and run smoothly. I had a veterinarian to guide me in keeping the cows healthy; a nutritionist to help keep the cows producing to their genetic potential; an agronomist to assist in keeping the land fertile for top yields; and an accountant to help determine the greatest efficiencies in each area of the business.
Listening to these professionals and benefiting from their experience enabled me to make informed decisions in every area of the operation— from producing quality hay and crops, to meeting the highest of milk production standards, to keeping the machinery in good repair.
This is exactly the protocol that a wise Mayor and Council should follow in guiding the Town. Senior Town staff have years if not decades of experience in their chosen professions and this knowledge should be respected and drawn upon when conducting Town business.
A good Council will question staff members about any advice given and staff will explain the rationale behind their recommendations. This ensures that the Town is functioning at its top potential.
